Your biological or assigned sex at birth does not always tell your complete story.
Sexual anatomy that’s typically called male includes your penis and scrotum (external male genitalia) and internal reproductive organs like the testicles. Sexual anatomy that’s typically called female includes the vulva and internal reproductive organs like the uterus and ovaries Intersex is a general term used for a variety of situations in which a person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the boxes of “female” or “male.” |
|
The Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) is devoted to systemic change to end shame, secrecy, and unwanted genital surgeries for people born with an anatomy that someone decided is not standard for male or female.
Gender is how society thinks we should look, think, and act as girls and women and boys and men. Understandings of gender continually evolve. In the course of a person’s life, the interests, activities, clothing and professions that are considered the domain of one gender or another evolve in ways both small and large. Gender roles in society means how we’re expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based upon our assigned sex. It is often helpful to explore and consider the gender messages you have absorbed as a child and even later in life. Take a few minutes to reflect and acknowledge the messages about gender that you may have without realizing. |
Clothing, appearance, and behaviors can all be ways to express your gender identity. Your gender identity is how you feel inside and how you express those feelings. The vocabulary of gender continues to evolve and there is not universal agreement about the definitions of many terms. Nonetheless, here is some working language and examples of frequently used (and misused) terms. We offer them as a starting place for dialogue and understanding, which begins by clarifying how we are using various terms, rather than asserting that they represent the final or only definition of the various terms. Most of us have had little or no education about gender. So it's important to understand and address some common myths many of us hold about gender, children and youth.

Since the earliest humans walked the earth, individuals have wondered where they came from, why they’re here, and what it all means. Religion, by and large, represents society’s attempts to answer those questions. |
Spirituality means different things to different people. For some, it's primarily about a belief in God and active participation in organized religion. For others, it's about non-religious experiences that help them get in touch with their spiritual selves through quiet reflection, time in nature, private prayer, yoga, or meditation. |
