If you are a fan of learning about the past and another culture through fiction then I would highly recommend The Night Diary. We are able to envision the 1950's political turmoil in India through the eyes of 12 year old Nisha who wrote to her deceased mother daily in her diary. We see first hand the hardships, violence and upheaval of Nisha's family because of religious differences among Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs. You will look forward to reading Nisha's journal of their journey through India to Pakistan. The author loosely based the story on what happened to her father's family, which made the story more believable. I also enjoyed the map of Nisha's family's journey found on the end pages of the book. This is a Newbery Honor book and one that should be read.
For ages 10 and up.
