When Rachel Chu decided to go with her boyfriend to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore, she had no idea what she was in store for. For starters, he is filthy rich. Secondly, his Mother has had her investigated to see if she has the right background and breeding to marry into the family. It doesn’t matter how brilliant and poised she is, being an American raised Chinese born on the mainland means she doesn’t fit in. So how do deal with being in love with Singapore’s most eligible bachelor when you had no idea he was rich in the first place?
This is the first book in the series about the fast lives of Singapore’s ultra fabulously wealthy. It’s no serious work of literary fiction; what it is instead is great fun. Kwan takes the reader on a behind the scenes tour of the Singapore jet set and lifestyle of the “crazy rich”. In addition, the reader learns some great new words and phrases commonly used in local society. Plus, Singapore is a food lover’s paradise and Kwan does a great job of describing local delicacies and hot spots. Think of it as the Chinese version of Gossip Girl. It’s soapy, dramatic, over the top, and just a great piece of mind candy. Perfect for beach reading. I can’t wait to read the sequel.
